Few foods have been demonised like carbohydrates. Cut them out, the message goes, and energy, weight, and focus will fall into place. For some people, in some situations, reducing refined carbs helps. But the blanket idea that all carbs are bad is one of the most unhelpful myths in wellness, especially if you are already running on stress.

Carbs and your stress response

When you are busy and depleted, your body leans heavily on its stress system. Healthy carbohydrates actually help calm that system. They support steady energy, they help your body wind down in the evening, and they play a role in mood and sleep. Strip them out entirely while you are already stretched thin, and you can end up more wired, more tired, and more prone to crashes.

It is about quality, not elimination

The goal is not to fear carbs or to eat endless refined ones. It is to choose carbohydrates that come with fibre, nutrients, and slow steady energy: vegetables, fruit, beans and lentils, oats, and whole grains. These are the carbs that heal rather than spike.

A kinder approach

Instead of asking how few carbs you can survive on, ask which ones make you feel good and stable. Pair them with protein and fat, eat them as part of real meals, and notice how your energy responds. For most busy professionals, the answer is not less food. It is better food, eaten with a little more care.
